Men’s Health Stats

June marks National Men’s Health Month, a month where we encourage men to take care of themselves physically and emotionally by exercising, dieting, disease prevention, going to therapy, or joining recovery programs if need be. Here are some of the top stats men need to be aware of right now to better themselves-

  • According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, men are more likely to use all types of drugs than women, including misuse of prescription drugs. They’re also more likely to end up in an emergency room or overdose than women.
  • According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, American men die on average 5 years earlier than women and also die at higher rates from the leading causes of death- cancer, accidental injury, and heart disease.
  • Men are more likely to drink excessively, according to the CDC’s latest survey. Close to 59% of adult men reported drinking in the past 30 days compared with 47% of women. Men are also twice as likely to binge drink, and more than three-quarters of excessive drinking deaths were among males. They’re 50% more likely to have been intoxicated compared with women.
  • Also according to the CDC, males are more than three times as likely to commit suicide than women, and more likely to have been drinking prior to the suicide.
